Algal oil (from Schizochytrium sp.) - plant-based source of omega-3 fatty acids
Algal oil is a vegan, plant-based alternative to fish oil, rich in the omega-3 fatty acids DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). It is extracted from microalgae such as Schizochytrium sp., which naturally produce these fatty acids. This makes algal oil a fish-free option—particularly interesting for vegetarian or vegan diets.
Botanical characteristics
Schizochytrium sp. belongs to the Thraustochytriaceae family and is a single-celled marine microalgae (protist). It produces DHA and EPA directly—unlike fish, which absorb these fatty acids from their diet.
